WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 20 Shenandoah University celebrated its Senior Day with a 3-1 non-league baseball victory over Penn St. – Harrisburg.
Shenandoah (31-10) scored two runs in the first and one in the fifth to earn the victory in the first-ever baseball meeting between the Hornets and Lions (31-11).
Senior Jordon Edlund, drawing his first-ever start, had the game-winning RBI with a single to right center to score classmate Nick Goode from second base.
Goode had driven in the first run of the frame with a single up the middle.
In the fifth, Tristan Baker plated an insurance run on a fielder's choice.
Freshman Michael Prosperi tossed the first 6 1/3 innings to get the victory. Prosperi (3-1) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out three.
With runners at second and third and one out in the seventh, SU skipper turned to relievers Seth Comer and Derrick Snider to get out of the jam.
Comer got a strikeout before issuing an intentional walk to load the bases and set up a force at any base.
Snider, a left-hander, came on to face left-handed pinch hitter Zachary Koroneos, and Snider did his job by striking Koroneos on a 2-2 fastball.
He then worked a scoreless ninth before turning it over to classmate Michael Bugonowicz.
Bugonowicz picked up his second save in 24 hours, and sixth of the season, by striking out the side following a leadoff check-swing single.
Junior Luke Nussman had two of the Hornets seven hits.
Shenandoah returns to ODAC Tournament play on Friday with 4 p.m. game at Lynchburg City Stadium versus top-seeded Randolph-Macon.
