Hobart Outlasts Football

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Hobart College scored the final 14 points of the game Saturday night to outlast Shenandoah University 56-48 in non-league football action.

IN DEPTH

The two teams combined for 1076 yards of offense, 575 for Shenandoah (2-1) and 501 for Hobart (2-1).

SU held the ball for 35:48 of game time, running 98 plays to just 52 for the Statesmen.

But Hobart turned in big play after big play to earn the victory.

The Statesmen averaged 9.6 yards per play and scored touchdowns from 70, 75 and 95 yards (the last on a kickoff return) to match the Hornets score-for-score.

Shenandoah quarterback Hayden Bauserman set a new school record for completions with a 46-for-64 night that included six touchdown passes and 471 through the air. Sophomore Jake Wallace was the prime beneficiary, making 14 catches for 195 yards and three TDs, but coughed up the ball on what turned out to be the Hornets final offensive play of the night.

Trailing by the final margin, SU took possession on its own 45 with 1:02 remaining. Following an incomplete pass, Bauserman found Wallace on a crossing route at the Hobart 43, where he was almost immediately separated from the ball on a perfect hit from a Hobart defender.

The ball popped in the air and was recovered by Hobart to clinch the victory.

The Hornets final play ended a night in which Bauserman threw touchdown passes to four different receivers and passed the 100-touchdown mark for his career.

In addition to Wallace' 14 receptions, Jalen Hudson had 10 catches for the hosts.

Hobart quarterback Ryan Hoffman was 18-for-24 for 328 and four TDs himself with wideout Jake Catalioto hauling in seven catches for 168 yards and a score.

Tyler Williams and Bernie Hayes each had seven catches.

QUOTEABLE

"This was a game of missed opportunities," SU head coach Scott Yoder said. "We had our chances, but gave some up and got beat by a good football team. We will learn from this and be ok."
