Women's Soccer Takes Down Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -  Women's soccer defeated Stevenson 2-1 in a non-league road contest Wednesday evening.

After the Mustangs (0-5-2) took the lead in the third minute of the game off of a penalty kick, the Hornets (3-4) were able to tie it up midway through the first half on a Shannen de Leon goal.

Midway through the second, Emily Yergin set up Abby Alexa with the game-winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SHENANDOAH

28′ | Shannen de Leon tied up the score 1-1 off of a header goal. After an Abbie Marquette shot was blocked, Dornesha Cottoms crossed the ball into the box to set up de Leon's goal.

74′ | Emily Yergin was on the right side of the box, she serviced a great ball to Abby Alexa who scored just inside the far post for 17 yeards out. Alexa's goal is her second of the season and her first game-winning tally.

STEVENSON

03′ | Shenandoah committed a handball violation inside the box and the Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick. Alayna Roesener took advantage of the opportunity and scored.

"Abby Alexa and Jocelyn Granados both had standout performances tonight, head coach Liz Pike said. "Emily and DC (Emily Yergin and Dornesha Cottoms) did a great job to set up Abby for the goal to clinch the win."

UP NEXT

The Hornets start conference play at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 against former USA South rival and ODAC newcomer Ferrum College.

MATCH NOTES

  • The Mustangs outshot the Hornets 21-18.

  • Stevenson also had the advantage in corners 7-5.

  • Emilie Smith recorded seven saves.

  • This is the second year in a row the two programs have met since first meeting in 2008. The series is now 2-1 in the Hornets favor.
