WINCHESTER, Va. – A scoop-and-score, combined with an 80-yard pick-six, keyed a 41-31 ODAC football victory for Emory & Henry Saturday over host Shenandoah.

E&H (5-1, 4-1 ODAC) jumped out to a 24-0 lead over the Hornets (4-3, 3-3) but had to hold on as Shenandoah made a furious second half comeback.

Trailing 31-10 at halftime after the Wasps drove 76 yards in five plays to score a touchdown with 15 seconds to play in the first half, Shenandoah scored 14 unanswered in the third quarter to begin its comeback.

Freshman
Chris Sonnenberg, who was inserted at quarterback on the Hornets third possession of the game, capped an 11-play, 77-yard drive with a nine-yard TD pass to
Brant Butler on third-and-goal.

E&H drove 37 yards on seven plays on its ensuing drive, but missed a 49-yard field goal to give the Hornets the ball back on their own 20 with 6:25 remaining in the third.

Shenandoah took 2:35 to drive that 80 yards in nine plays, ending with a 17-yard
Samuel Adams touchdown run to make it 31-24.

The two teams then traded two possessions each, crossing the bridge into the fourth quarter, before Emory & Henry sealed the game in a span of eight plays.

Matt Seals put the Wasps up 41-31 on a 40-yard field goal, and after Shenandoah had driven to the E&H 19, Grayson Overstreet put the contest out of reach by picking off a Sonnenberg screen pass and returning it 80-yards for the game-clinching score.

Shenandoah didn't fold its tents, driving 74 yards in 11 plays to make it 41-31 with 3:51 remaining.

Drew Geyer then executed a perfect on-side kick, giving SU the ball on the 50-yard line with a chance to cut the deficit to three.

The Hornets were able to advance the ball only 13 yards before turning the ball over on downs and did not get the ball back until 42 seconds remained in the game.

Seals opened the game's scoring with a 29-yard field goal midway through the first before E&H made it 10-0 thanks to a 40-yard Da'von Keith scoop-and-score at the 5:56 mark.

Mario Wisdom scored the hosts' initial touchdown on a 59-yard scamper five minutes into the second quarter.

Shenandoah, which held the ball for 34:33, outgained the Wasps 515 to 425. Sonnenberg finished the game 34-for-62 for 340 for two touchdowns against four interceptions. The final pick came on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game.

Adams, Sonnenberg's classmate, had 95 yards rushing on 12 carries and added another 48 yards receiving.

Casey Stewart had 105 yards receiving on seven catches.

For the Wasps, quarterback Hunter Taylor was 13-for-28 for 247 yards passing but all but 27 of those yards came in the first half. He added another 92 yards on the ground.

Max Yates had five receptions for 141 yards.

Defensively,
Randy Oliver had 12 tackles for SU and Overstreet the same number for Emory & Henry.
