WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team earned its first victory over Eastern Mennonite in nine years with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Royals Wednesday evening.

In a game in which each team converted a penalty kick and Shenandoah (5-7, 1-2 ODAC) gave up a game-tying own goal in the 88
th minute, the Hornets got the game-winner 6:37 into overtime to push past EMU (5-8, 0-2).

Branden Gallant, who had given the Hornets a 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal in the 27
th minute, tallied the game-winner at 96:37 when he took a feed from
William Majano and
Hector Colon and lofted a long shot past Eastern Mennonite keeper Ahmed Zaatar.

Gallant's goal gave SU its first victory over the Royals since a 3-0 home triumph on September 1, 2010 and just its fifth win in the series since 1995.

Just past the 60-minute mark, Gallant by served up a header to
Aaron Holder to give the Hornets a 4-2 advantage. Holder flicked the header past Zaatar and Shenandoah seemingly had a comfortable two-goal advantage.

But Eastern Mennonite had other ideas.

The Royals got a Caleb Oakes goal at 77:39 and then were gifted an own goal with 2:24 remaining to send the game into sudden-victory overtime.

Awarded a free kick just to the right of the Shenandoah goal, EMU lofted the ball across the front of Hornets keeper
Michael Romeo, where it was shot wide.

Unfortunately for the Shentel Stadium faithful, an SU defender stepped into make a play on the ball and redirected it into the open net for the equalizer.

Gallant, however, made all of that academic with his golden goal at 96:37.
Â
The two teams combined for four goals in the initial 18:20 of the contest with Eastern Mennonite converting its PK at 7:47 and SU at 18:20.

Majano, who scored on the penalty for the Hornets, set up
Trace Becker with the hosts' initial goal of the game.

Romeo had five saves in the win.
