WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University completed its 2019 ODAC football slate Saturday with a 34-31 loss to Washington & Lee.
Â
Shenandoah (5-4, 4-4 ODAC) had a chance to win it on the final play of the game, but W&L (6-4, 5-3) picked off the Hail Mary pass to seal the victory.
IN DEPTH
The game featured more than 750 yards of offense, eight touchdowns and two blocked punts as the Generals were able to hold on for the three-point win.
Â
W&L got what proved to be the game-winning points as Jarrett Wright kicked a 39-yard field goal with 7:02 remaining to put the Generals up 34-24.
Â
Wright's field goal, which barely cleared the crossbar, was his second of the contest.
Â
Shenandoah answered with a 10-play, 76-yard drive that took 3:44 and ended with a
Chris Sonnenberg-to-
Casey Stewart touchdown pass on 4
th-and-goal from the 2.
Â
The touchdown was one of three that Sonnenberg threw to Stewart on the afternoon.
Â
Sonnenberg, making his second-ever start, finished his day 29-for-40 for 263 yards and four touchdowns against four interceptions.
Â
Two of those picks came in the end zone, one in the first quarter and one in the third.
Â
Sonnenberg's first TD pass, a 46-yarder to
Miles Moore in the first quarter, tied the game at 7-7.
Â
W&L answered with a nine-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a Josh Breece 9-yard TD run.
Â
Breece finished the game with 21 carries for 151 yards and the one touchdown.
Â
After falling behind 21-7, a
Nigel Duberry blocked punt and return set up a two-play, 20-yard drive that saw Sonnenberg hit Stewart with a 10-yard TD pass.
Â
The duo hooked up again with 1:06 to play in the first half, this time from 11-yards out, to make it 24-21 in favor of the visitors.
Â
Wright had a 29-yard field goal in between those two Sonnenberg-to-Stewart TD passes.
Â
The Generals opened the second half with a nine-play, 59-yard drive to extend the lead back to 10 points before
Drew Geyer hit a 28-yard field goal for SU to keep the Hornets within striking distance at 31-24.
Â
That field goal closed out the third quarter scoring.
Â
Defensively,
Nate Hill was held without an interception for just the second time this season, but led all players with 14 tackles.
Ben Burgan had 13 and both Duberry and
Trammel Anthony 10 each.
Â
Burgan and Hill both forced a fumble.
QUOTABLE
"Missed opportunities in the red zone came back to haunt us today," head coach
Scott Yoder said. "We had too many turnovers versus a good team."
Â
In addition to the four interceptions, Shenandoah fumbled a kickoff and had a punt blocked. W&L scored 14 points off of those SU miscues.
