Hornets Trap Gophers

TOWSON, Md. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team ran its winning streak to four games with a 63-55 non-conference victory at Goucher College Wednesday evening.

Shenandoah (4-2) led wire-to-wire in taking out the Gophers (4-3).

Senior Jordan Sondrol, who entered the game just 34 points from 1000 for her career, is now just 16 points from that goal after leading the victors with a game-high 18 points.

THE RUNDOWN

1st Quarter

The Hornets outscored the Gophers 16-7 in the first quarter, scoring the initial three buckets of the game and ending the stanza with six consecutive points from Olivia Weinel.

2nd Quarter

Shenandoah increased their lead to 14 by the 4:23 mark with a Brooke Riley jumper and held Goucher to single digits in the quarter.

3rd Quarter

The hosts made adjustments at the half, scoring 19 points in the stanza.  Jordan Sondrol answered that offensive surge with 12 points, half of the Hornets' output in the third, to keep the hosts at bay.

4th Quarter

SU withstood an 8-2 Goucher run to start the fourth and coasted home to the eight-point win.

QUOTE FROM COACH

"I have been really happy with how we have been able to control the glass this year and tonight was another example," head coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft said. "We outrebounded them by 20. A lot of women saw the court tonight and made it happen for each other with 20 of our 26 made field goals coming off assisted plays."

STATS OF THE DAY

  •  Jordan Sondrol led the way with 18 points, Weinel and Ragan Johnson added 12 each.

  • The Hornets recorded 14 steals and four blocks.

  • Shenandoah shot 46.4%  from the field and 91% from the line.
