WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Gettysburg College opened up its 2019 softball season Thursday by sweeping a non-league doubleheader from Shenandoah University.
The Bullets (2-0) had 18 hits in the opening game before getting a one-hitter in the nightcap to sweep Shenandoah (2-5).
GAME ONE
Gettysburg scored the 18 runs on 18 hits and five Hornets errors that led to 10 of the runs being unearned. GC scored three runs in the first, three in the second, seven in the third and three in the fourth to take a commanding lead its hosts.
After Shenandoah rallied from a 6-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the second, Gettysburg scored seven runs (all unearned) in the third to break the game wide open.
The Hornets had 11 hits of their own in the loss with BayLee Jenkins hitting a two-run home run in the fifth and both Allie Schey and Maryann Hollen getting three hits each.
Schey had four RBI in the contest with starting pitcher Morgan Henley going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Henley (1-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks in two different stints in the circle.
Carrie Robinson had three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings and Megan Scalley four in 4 1/3.
GAME TWO
Gettysburg completed the sweep with a 9-0, five-inning win in the nightcap.
Skylar Spinner held the Hornets without a hit for the first 3 2/3 before Jenkins singled up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. Spinner also walked six.
GC scored four runs in the third and four more in the fourth before adding one in the fifth to provide the final margin.
Henley took the game two loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings of work.
UP NEXT
With Friday's doubleheader versus Wilkes postponed, Shenandoah returns to the diamond on Saturday with a non-league doubleheader at Mary Washington.
