Captains Sweep Softball

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team dropped a pair of non-league contests at No. 8 Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon.

CNU (9-1) was a 10-0 winner in the opener before dispatching the Hornets (2-7) by a 9-1 count in the nightcap. Both games went six innings.

GAME ONE

Shenandoah was held to three hits in game one, two from catcher Meghan Stout and one from pitcher Morgan Henley, and CNU led 6-0 after five.

A grand slam in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early.

Henley (1-3) allowed the 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits and three walks in the complete game performance.

GAME TWO

Stout plated the first run of the game on a double to left in the bottom of the first to score Carly Shaw, who had drawn a one-out walk, from second, but it was not enough as the Captains had an answer.

CNU tied the game in the bottom of the frame and after the two teams traded scoreless at-bats for the next three innings, scored five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to close out the sweep.

Maryann Hollen was 2-for-3 with Henley and Stout both posting a 1-for-3 performance.

Carrie Robinson (1-2) took the loss after allowing nine runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Robinson also struck out four.
