VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team completed its regular season Thursday by dropping an ODAC doubleheader to No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan.
VWU (33-2, 17-1 ODAC) was a 9-1 winner in the opener before completing the sweep over the Hornets (18-21, 7-13) with a 15-3 win in the nightcap. Both games were halted after five innings due to the NCAA mercy rule.
GAME ONE
The Marlins broke open a close game with three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth to win 9-1.
SU was held to three hits in the contest, one each from Morgan Henley, Carly Shaw and Jenna Barr.
In the third, Barr drove in Henley with the Hornets lone run of the contest on a two-out single up the middle. Henley had reached on a one-out double to center.
Carrie Robinson (8-9) took the loss after allowing nine runs (six earned) on five hits and eight walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Hanna Hull (21-1) was the winner for the hosts. She struck out nine in the complete game performance.
GAME TWO
Virginia Wesleyan banged out 20 hits in the 15-3 game two victory.
VWU scored six runs in the first, one in the second and five in the third to take the commanding lead over the Hornets.
Shaw was 2-for-3 to lead the SU offense with Barr and Sydney Viar each driving in one.
Megan Scalley (6-8) went the distance for Shenandoah, allowing 15 runs (13 earned) on the 20 hits and one walk.
Carla Hall (11-1) tossed the first four innings for the victors, allowing an unearned run on three hits and one walk.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah has completed its regular season and now awaits the remainder of the ODAC slate to be complete to determine if it has qualified for the eight-team ODAC Tournament.
