WINCHESTER, Va. – Third-seeded Shenandoah University got a complete game shutout from senior Robert Klinchock on its way to a 5-0 ODAC Baseball Tournament first round victory over Hampden-Sydney Saturday.
Shenandoah (27-11) can now close out the series with a win in Sunday's game two. Should the Tigers (17-18-2) win game two, the two teams will play a decisive game three 30 minutes following the completion of game two.
IN BRIEF
Klinchock (6-4) threw his second consecutive complete game by scattering seven hits and three walks against three strikeouts.
The southpaw also benefitted by outstanding defensive plays in the first, third, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth innings.
Shenandoah turned inning ending double plays in the first and third with Frankie Ritter starting a 5-3 double play in the third with a diving stop as H-SC threatened with the bases loaded and one out.
Tristan Baker and Henry Delavergne had diving catches in the fourth and eighth, respectively, and Keegan Woolford got the first out of the ninth by cutting Matthew Spagnolo down at second as Spagnolo attempted to stretch his single to left into a double.
The Hornets got all of the offense they would need in the first as Ritter led off with a single up the middle and Baker beat out a sacrifice bunt for a single.
Both men moved up one base on a Tigers throwing error and scored as Woolford and Luke Nussman bounced out to first on consecutive at-bats.
Baker had an RBI single in the third before Ritter plated the final run with a double to right center in the seventh.
Klinchock retired H-SC in order in the second, fourth and eighth.
Ritter finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
