Wolves Sweep Softball

Hornets Drop 6-0 and 9-4 Decisions

WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University completed its softball opening weekend by dropping a pair of games to Alvernia University Sunday afternoon.
 
The Golden Wolves (2-0) were 6-0 and 9-4 winners over the Hornets (0-4) in non-league action. 

GAME ONE RECAP

Alvernia starter Riley Shields (1-0) held Shenandoah to just three hits in tossing a complete game.
 
The Golden Wolves backed her up with 11 hits and scored one run in the first and four in the second to seize control.
 
Sammy Amateau, Morgan Henley and Allie Schey had the Hornets hits.
 
Shields struck out five and did not walk a batter.
 
Megan Scalley (0-2) went the first five innings and allowed six runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out two.

GAME TWO RECAP

SU took a 3-0 lead thanks to two runs in the second and one in the third before Alvernia responded with two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the lead for good.
 
The visitors extended their advantage with another run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
 
Schey got the Hornets on the board in the second with a two-run single to left and Nikki Stone made it 3-0 with a single into the right center gap in the third.
 
Stone plated Henley, who had reached on a base on balls.
 
Schey's two-out single brought home BayLee Jenkins and Arlene Miller. Jenkins led off the frame with a single to right center and after a pair of strikeouts, Miller reached on an infield single that sent Jenkins to third.
 
In the seventh, Henley had a leadoff triple and scored on Sierra Beaty's groundout to short.
 
Henley (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Lacey Clopper, who pitched the final two innings of the opener, allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and one walk in 1 2/3.
 
Henley struck out four.
 
Jenkins had two of the Hornets seven hits.

The Hornets are back in action Saturday at Southern Virginia.
