WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Hampden-Sydney opened up the 2020 ODAC men's lacrosse slate with a 16-9 victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon.
 
The Tigers (4-1, 1-0 ODAC) used a five-goal run that bridged the end of the first quarter to take a lead over SU (4-2, 0-1) that they would not relinquish.

IN BRIEF

Shenandoah wasted little time in jumping on H-SC as the Hornets won the opening faceoff and took just 14 seconds to score the game's initial goal.
 
Austin Gallier, the SU face-off man, found LSM Zack Zimmerman for that initial tally.
 
Jay Baker gave the hosts a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 3:21 of the first.
 
Baker's goal, one of two on the day for the sophomore, seemed to wake up the Tigers.
 
H-SC scored the game's next five goals, holding Shenandoah off the board for 13:58, to take the 5-2 lead.
 
Chris Baker broke the scoreless drought with an unassisted goal at 4:23 of the second.
 
Coach Tim Marshall's club kept it close for the remainder of the first half and got a Jay Baker-to-Logan Clingerman goal as the first half ended to make it 6-5 in favor of the visitors.
 
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Hampden-Sydney scored six of the seven third quarter goals to pull away.
 
Robert Harvey had the hosts lone goal of the quarter, scoring unassisted at 8:01.
 
Shenandoah scored three of the final four goals of the contest with freshman Tyler Held notching all three.
 
Jason Simpson had 15 saves in the loss.
