Football Drops Heartbreaker

Ferrum Wins 24-23 on Late Field Goal

FERRUM, Va. – Host Ferrum College hit a 35-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining Saturday to earn a 24-23 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah.

The Panthers (5-1, 2-1 ODAC) was put in position to hit the game-winner as Shenandoah (4-2, 2-2) was called for a pass interference penalty at the SU 18.

IN DEPTH
With the ball placed at the 18, Ferrum trotted out kicker Seth Heaton for the game-winning try and the freshman split the uprights to give the hosts the come-from-behind victory.

Shenandoah had jumped out to a 13-0 lead thanks to a 74-yard Brant Butler-to-Caleb Reedy flea-flicker touchdown pass and a pair of Patrick Ritchie field goals only to see the Panthers score a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-13 lead with 5:52 remaining in the third.

SU answered with an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 3-yard Rashadeen Byrd Jr. touchdown run to regain the lead at 21-14, but Ferrum once again had an answer.

The Panthers, who scored their second touchdown two plays after picking off Hornets quarterback Steven Hugney, turned the trick again midway through the fourth.

Picking off Hugney at its own 48, FC needed just one play for quarterback Titus Jones to find Tmahdae Penn with a 48-yard TD pass to lead 21-20.

Shenandoah again drove, this time 65-yards in 11 plays, and set Ritchie up to be the hero after he drilled a 24-yard field goal at 1:47.

Out of timeouts, Ferrum drove the 62 yards in nine plays to put Denton in position to hit the game-winner.

SU outgained its hosts 414-339 and possessed the ball for 34:09.

Butler had 102 yards receiving on nine catches along with his touchdown pass.

Ben Burgan had 12 tackles to lead the defense.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah returns home next Saturday for a 1 p.m. non-league contest with DII Emory & Henry.
