WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team earned its first ODAC win of the 2021 season with a 5-1 victory over Guilford College Saturday afternoon.
Â
Shenandoah (6-5, 1-1 ODAC) scored a pair of goals midway through the first half to provide all of the offense it would need versus Guilford (4-3, 1-2).
Â
IN BRIEF
Niclas Vavra netted the opening goal for SU, finishing off a
Connor Robles cross at 23:44.
Â
Twelve minutes later,
Nathan Yared made it 2-0 when he knocked home a
Matthew D'Lugos feed for his sixth goal of the fall.
Â
In the second half, moments after Shenandoah goalkeeper
Travis Jett came up with his second PK save of the week, Robles and Vavra hooked up again for a goal.
Â
Vavra notched his second goal of the game, and eighth of the year, by tapping home Robles' feed into the middle of the box.
Â
First-year
Jasson Acosta put a cap on his emotional day with a breakaway goal at 84:52. Just prior to kickoff, Acosta was surprised at midfield by his brother, Private First Class Brandon Romero, who returned to the United States following a two-year tour in South Korea. Following his goal, Acosta sprinted to the home stands and snapped off a salute to his brother.
Â
Barely two minutes later, Yared closed the book on the day's scoring with his second tally of the afternoon.
Â
The win snaps a three-match losing streak for the Hornets.
Â
UP NEXT
Shenandoah continues this homestand on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. ODAC contest versus Virginia Wesleyan.
