WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University volleyball team completed its season with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (7-16, 3-8 ODAC) punched its ticket to the ODAC Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Ferrum in the opening match before taking out Hood, 3-2, in the final match of the day.
FERRUM MATCH RECAP
The Hornets rebounded from a 25-20 loss to the Panthers (7-18, 2-9) in the opening set to win at 12, 18, and 15 in sets two through four.
The win qualifies SU for the upcoming eight-team ODAC Tournament as the No. 8 seed and a Wednesday quarterfinal round date at Washington & Lee.
After hitting .158 (13-7—38) in the opening set, the Hornets rebounded to hit .250 (11-2—36) in the second. Coach
Kent Clayberg's club then had a combined 23 kills against 13 errors in 77 attempts (.130) in closing out the victory.
Sophomore
Jillian Warter had a match-high 14 kills for the victors with
Kate Poppo adding 11 and
Cheyenne Price seven.
Caitlyn Houck and
Abby Lichtenfels had 17 assists each with
Brooke Wagner posting 29 digs, Warter 10 and Poppo nine.
Aaliyah Chunn had six of the squad's 12 blocks.
The win is the 10
th straight for Shenandoah over the Panthers.
HOOD MATCH RECAP
Shenandoah won the opening set, 25-18, but had to rally as Hood (4-19) took a 2-1 lead with wins at 21 and 19 in sets two and three.
The Hornets forced a fifth set by winning 26-24 in the fourth and then dominated in a 15-8 victory in the decisive fifth.
Clayberg's club hit a match-high .375 (7-1—16) in the fifth.
Poppo led the victors with 20 kills while
Brooke Gast added 15 and Chunn 10.
Defensively, Wagner had 35 digs, Poppo 29 and Gast 11.
Lichtenfels and Houck ran the offense with 23 and 18 assists, respectively.
UP NEXT
The Hornets open ODAC Tournament play on Wednesday at 7 p.m. with a quarterfinal round contest at top-seeded Washington & Lee.
