WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team earned its first win of the 2021-22 season Saturday with a 93-62 non-league win over Gallaudet University.
Â
The win for Shenandoah (1-3) snaps a 19-game losing streak dating back to a 103-97 ODAC victory over Bridgewater on Jan. 22, 2020.
Â
IN BRIEF
The Hornets led virtually wire-to-wire over Gallaudet as SU scored the opening bucket of the game and then for good following a
Jaylen Williams '3' at the 18:52 mark.
Â
The lead expanded out to 21 points by the time the second half was two minutes old but the Bison briefly made matters interesting with a 16-5 run from the 13:04 to 8:38 marks. This cut the SU lead to just 10, 60-50.
Â
The two teams then traded the pair of possessions before Shenandoah reasserted control with a Williams layup with 7:44 remaining. Williams' bucket, one of 10 he had on the afternoon, kickstarted a 33-12 game closing run for the Hornets.
Â
The final points in that game-ending run were the most emphatic with first-year
Mekhi Mims flushing a dunk with 29 seconds left to provide the final margin of victory.
Â
Williams, with 30 points, was the only SU player in double figures. All 15 men in uniform scored at least one point. Williams also had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Â
Shenandoah shot 48 percent (34 of 71) and had 43 rebounds. Gallaudet was 19 of 65 (29 percent) from the field and pulled down 48 boards.
Â
Brandon Chung had 18 points for the visitors.
