Women's Hoops Dominates Goucher

Hornets Win, 75-34

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team had a dominating opening performance Saturday evening in a 75-34 non-league victory over Goucher College.

Shenandoah (1-0) led 21-8 after one and 36-16 at the break in running past Goucher (0-1).

IN BRIEF
A 12-3 run to start the game put SU in total control of the contest. Five different women scored during this opening run with senior Olivia Weinel and classmate Sierra St. Cyr both contributing three points.

A St. Cyr 3-pointer at 2:13, one of three she had on the night, pushed the lead into double digits for the first time.

Goucher would trail by less than 10 points for just 24 seconds over the remainder of the contest.

The lead expanded to 20 points midway through the second and after a pair of Ragan Johnson free throws with 25 seconds remaining, had a first half peak of 22 points.

The second half brought more of the same as Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club scored 17 of the 25 third quarter points and 22 of the 32 points in the fourth.

SU shot 50.9 percent (28 of 55) from the field to just 20 percent (10 of 50) for the Gophers and the Hornets owned a 40-34 advantage on the glass.

Thirteen of the 14 women that appeared in the game for Shenandoah scored at least one point with St. Cyr's 13 points leading the way. No woman played more than 28 minutes in the win.

UP NEXT
The Hornets are back in action next weekend at the Jean Beamer Tipoff Classic hosted by Roanoke College. SU plays Albright and Hood in the classic-format tourney.
