Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker

Mary Baldwin Wins, 74-73

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Mary Baldwin made the penultimate successful shot of the game stand up in a 74-73 non-league men's basketball victory over Shenandoah University Sunday afternoon.

Shenandoah (2-7) had the game's final attempt, but a game-winning 3-pointer from the corner glanced off the front of the rim.

IN BRIEF
Mary Baldwin (2-8) got the game-winning points on a Tyler Thomas '3' with 33 seconds remaining. The shot gave the Squirrels a 74-71 lead.

SU raced down the floor and cut the deficit to one as Davion Roberts hit a runner in the lane with 29 seconds remaining.

The Hornets fouled on the in-bounds and it worked out, as Mary Baldwin's Jaden Ignacio missed both attempts and Gavin Bizyak grabbed the rebound of the second miss.

On the final possession, SU worked the ball around before finding Roberts in the corner just before time expired. His shot was just short, giving MBU the win.

The final stretch also capped a game in which the two teams traded the lead 17 times and were tied on 12 additional occasions.

Jaylen Williams led the hosts with 22 points and 11 rebounds with Roberts adding 13 points and Mekhi Mims 10 points off the bench.

Shenandoah shot 42 percent (29-of-69) and had 51 rebounds to 35 for Mary Baldwin. The Squirrels, who shot 45 percent (29-of-65), scored 17 points off of 15 Hornets turnovers.
