WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's tennis team opened up its 2021 season Wednesday afternoon with a 5-4 non-league victory over St. Mary's of Maryland.

The win is also the first on the men's side for head coach
Jason Cole. Cole took over the program prior to the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.Â

Shenandoah (1-0) took a 1-0 lead after doubles thanks to 8-1 and 8-5 victories at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

SMCM (0-1) was an 8-0 winner at No. 3.

Darian Diaz, who teamed with
Aidan Steinly in that 8-5 No. 2 doubles victory, got the first singles win with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 3.

Keith Orr and
Vitali Rivera then put the finishing touches on the win with Orr winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 and Rivera 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2.

The duo had combined for that 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles to get the day started for the Hornets.
