WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 3 Virginia Wesleyan continued its winning ways Sunday by sweeping a non-league softball doubleheader from Shenandoah University.
VWU (13-1-1) was a 13-4 victor in the opener before completing the sweep over Shenandoah (3-5) with a 10-3 game two win.
GAME ONE
Virginia Wesleyan scored in every inning except the second, keyed by a six-run seventh, on its way to the 13-4 victory.
Shenandoah had two four hits in the contest and scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh.
Sammy Amateau finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI with
Meghan Stout driving in two runs. Stout those RBI on a single through the left side in the sixth and a bases loaded walk in the seventh.
Megan Scalley (1-3) allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks against one strikeout in 5.0 innings of work.
Lacey Clopper and
Alexis Hurley finished up with both women recording one strikeout.
Hanna Hull (7-0) was the winner for VWU. She gave up one hit and two walks while striking out three in 4.0 innings.
GAME TWO
The nightcap was much closer, with the score tied thru three and the Hornets trailing by just two runs, 5-3, heading into the sixth.
Virginia Wesleyan expanded its lead at this point, scoring two runs on three hits in the sixth and another three runs on five hits in the seventh.
Allie Schey had two of the Hornets six hits and drove in two runs on a single through the right side in the fourth.
BayLee Jenkins had an RBI single in the third to plate the hosts' first run.
Kayla Stephenson (2-1) took the loss. She gave up 10 runs on 15 hits and two walks in throwing a complete game. The freshman also struck out two.

Shenandoah takes to the road Thursday for a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader at Mary Baldwin.
