Hornets Win, 19-18

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Shenandoah University earned its first football victory of the spring 2021 season Friday night with a 19-18 ODAC win at Bridgewater.
 
Shenandoah (1-3, 1-2 ODAC) got the winning points on a Chris Sonnenberg to Brant Butler touchdown with 32 seconds remaining.

Butler caught the pass at the 3 and broke two tackles on his way to the game-winning score.
 
The last-second heroics capped a quarter in which the two teams traded the lead four times.
 
Bridgewater (2-2, 1-2) had taken its final lead when Matt Lawton finished off a 4th-and-goal sneak from the SU 1 to put BC up, 18-13.
 
The Eagles two-point conversion attempt, their second of the game, was unsuccessful.
 
Shenandoah then drove 76 yards in 12 plays to earn the win.
 
Bridgewater started its final drive at its own 42 and threw four incomplete passes. SU had to snap the ball one more time to finish off its fifth-ever victory over the Eagles and its third at Jopson Field.
 
Sonnenberg, making his first start, finished the night 24-of-34 for 261 yards and the one touchdown against two interceptions.
 
Nick Rauchwarg was the main beneficiary of Sonnenberg's throws; he finished with 131 yards receiving on six receptions.
 
Rashadeen Byrd Jr. led the ground attack with 77 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
 
Defensively, David Agyei had 11 tackles while Ben Burgan made seven stops and had an interception.
 

NOTABLE

  • The two teams were a combined 0-for-4 on two-point PAT attempts and Bridgewater missed a PAT kick.
  • SU turned the ball over five times on three interceptions and two fumbles. Three of those turnovers came inside the BC 20.
  • Bridgewater had one fumble and one interception.
  • Shenandoah was 10 of 12 on third-down conversions.
