WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 13/35 Shenandoah University opened its 2021 baseball season Saturday by splitting a non-league doubleheader with Mount Aloysius.
Â
Shenandoah (1-1) was a 6-5 winner in the opener before the Mounties (1-1) salvaged the split by winning 6-4 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE
SU had to rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Mounties scored two runs on three hits in the top of the frame.
Â
SU scored those two runs on three hits;
Frankie Ritter had the game-winner with a single up the middle that brought home
Anthony Ward from third.
Â
Senior
Grant Thompson led off the bottom of the seventh with a double off the rightfield wall before advancing to third on a passed ball. Ward knotted the game at 5-5 with a single through the left side and moved into scoring position when
Kooper Anderson was hit by pitch.
Â
Following a wild pitch, catcher
Ryan Hayden was intentionally walked to load the bases for Ritter.
Â
With the infield playing in, Ritter greeted reliever Tanner Perrone with that single through the box that glanced off MAC shortstop Tyler Suder before hitting Anderson off of second base.
Â
Anderson was initially called out, but following a conference of the three umpires he was ruled safe and Ward's run held up as the winning margin.
Â
Ritter, Thompson and
Colby Martin all had two hits with Ritter driving in two runs.
Â
Sophomore
Tristan Everett (1-0) picked up the win in relief; he allowed one unearned run on two hits in one inning of work.
GAME TWO
Shenandoah led 3-0 thanks to one run in the first and two in the fourth, but Mount answered by scoring two runs in each of the final three frames to win, 6-4.
Â
Four of the Mounties six runs were unearned, including the two scored in the seventh that provided the final margin of victory.
Â
SU got the tying run on base in the seventh with one out, but Mount closer Douglas Cannon induced a groundout to second and a pop to short to end the contest.
Â
Senior
CJ Morton took the loss. He allowed two unearned runs on one walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Â
Martin, Anderson, and Ward all had two hits and Ritter drove in a pair.
