Lynchburg Scores on Penalty Stroke in OT to Win, 5-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Host University of Lynchburg converted a penalty stroke late in the first sudden victory overtime Friday night to advance to the ODAC Field Hockey Tournament championship with a 5-4 win over Shenandoah.

Fourth-seeded Shenandoah (7-4) held a 4-2 lead entering the fourth quarter only to see No. 1 Lynchburg (8-0) score a pair of goals to force the extra session.

IN BRIEF

Lynchburg got the game-winner after being awarded a penalty stroke with a little over two minutes to play in the first overtime period. Jackie Lerro, who had entered the game as the ODAC's leading scorer, drew the foul at the end of a counter-attack that started following a Shenandoah penalty corner.

Lerro lifted her shot in the upper right-hand corner of the net just out of the reach of SU goalkeeper Isabella Morande and send her club into Sunday's championship versus Washington & Lee.

Lerro's goal, her first of the game, capped a comeback that saw Lynchburg trail by two goals 12:08 to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

LYN 22:02 | Brittany Claybaugh and Jackie Lerro teamed up for the first goal with heavy traffic in front of the net.

SU 23:40 | Elizabeth Ranberger inserted a penalty corner on the left side of the goal to Kelsey Jones. Jones fired it home to tie up the contest 1-1.

LYN 25:01 | Claybaugh recorded her second of the night off an Aaryn Boatwright cross from the left side of the net.

SU 34:31 | Shenandoah was awarded a penalty stroke and Jones' shot slipped right under the Lynchburg goalkeeper's right hand.

SU 44:07 | SU took the lead for the first time of the night when Hannah Mink redirected a Farren Winter shot right in front of the right post

SU 44:55 | Cassidy Morrison cleaned up a deflected ball to extend Shenandoah's lead to 4-2

LYN 47:52 | Emily Dudley sent one home to the left side of the goal from an Emma Strouse's penalty corner.

LYN 55:30 | With a two-woman advantage, Emily Dudley redirected a strong shot up high into the net to tie it up for the hosts.

Shenandoah was awarded a penalty corner with 45 seconds remaining in regulation to win the game but Lynchburg was able to intercept a Jones' pass and went on a quick counter-attack. Morande's defense was able to clear the ball out to prevent any damage and sent the contest into overtime.

QUOTE FROM COACH

The one feeling I have right now is pride. My staff and I have pride in the way the team fought the entire game, pride for how my players left it all on the field, and pride for the way they supported one another throughout this contest. That was an incredible battle and we will be back next year ready to go." - Head Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft
