VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team earned its first-ever victory over a team ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 5-2 game one win at Virginia Wesleyan Friday afternoon.
Shenandoah (8-18, 5-13 ODAC) won for the first time ever versus VWU in league play with the three-run victory.
The Marlins (30-4-1, 14-2) returned the favor in game two with a 13-0, five-inning victory.
GAME ONE
The Hornets scored two runs in the third and then three in the fourth to earn their first win over VWU in the past 20 meetings.
Sophomore Megan Scalley was the winning pitcher, tossing the first 4.0 innings and allowing one run on six hits and four walks against two strikeouts.
Morgan Henley pitched the final three innings to get the save. In the seventh, the Marlins scored one run on three hits and one SU error and had the bases loaded with two outs.
Henley got pinch hitter Krissy D'Arco to tap back to her, and Henley's cutdown flip to catcher BayLee Jenkins was just in time for the final out of the contest.
Allie Schey drove in the victors first two runs with a single to left center and then one inning later, drove home another two runs with a single down the left field line.
Taylor Glover had the remaining RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk one batter in front of Schey's second RBI single.
Schey had three of the Hornets six hits in the win.
GAME TWO
VWU ensured that there would be no doubleheader sweep for the Hornets by scoring nine runs in the first and four more in the second on its way to the 13-0, five-inning victory.
Henley, Jenkins, Nikki Stone, and Allison Thompson all had one hit each for SU. Henley's was a double to right center in the second.
Kayla Stephenson (5-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs on six hits in 1/3Â of an inning. Scalley threw one inning before Alexis Hurley tossed the final 2 1/3.Â
