Softball Splits at Mary Washington

Stephenson Tosses One-Hitter in Nightcap

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Shenandoah University wrapped up its non-conference softball slate Tuesday afternoon by splitting a non-league doubleheader at Mary Washington.

Shenandoah (11-19) rebounded from a 4-3 loss in the opener to win game two, 5-1, over Mary Washington (8-16).

This is the second time this season these two teams have split their non-league double-dip.

GAME ONE

Mary Washington rallied from one run down on three different occasions in game one to take the 4-3, 8 inning victory.

Shenandoah scored one run on two hits in the fourth and scored single runs in the seventh and eighth only to see UMW answer each time.

The Eagles tied the game with a single run in the sixth, extended the game into extras with one run in the seventh and then scored two runs on three hits in the eighth to steal the victory.

Nikki Stone drove in two runs with a single in the fourth and a groundout to the pitcher in the eighth to lead the offense.

Morgan Henley (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

Megan Scalley tossed the first 6.0 innings and struck out two.

GAME TWO

Kayla Stephenson tossed a one-hitter and the Hornets scored four runs in the seventh on their way to the 5-1 win.

Henley, Kamryn Kelly and Allie Schey all had RBI doubles in the final frame and Taylor Glover brought home a run on a single to right.

Sammy Amateau plated Shenandoah's first run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Glover and BayLee Jenkins both had two hits in the win.

Stephenson (7-7) missed throwing a no-hitter by only allowing a leadoff single to center in the fifth. The freshman retired the Eagles in order in the first, second, fourth, sixth, and seventh.

Shenandoah awaits the announcement of the ODAC Tournament pairings and a possible berth into the eight-team tournament.
