WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's tennis team earned its first-ever ODAC victory over Bridgewater College with a 5-4 win Thursday afternoon.
Â
Freshman
Vitali Rivera completed the comeback victory for SU (6-2, 3-2 ODAC) with a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win at No. 2 singles.
IN BRIEF
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Hornets put themselves in position to win the match with victories at Nos. 3, 5, and 6 singles.
Â
Darian Diaz, who had combined with
Aidan Steinly to win, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles, got the singles started on the right note with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Nick Kiser.
Â
BC (2-6, 0-5) answered with a victory at No. 4 before Steinly took out Leyton Pullin, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5. Another Bridgewater victory, this one at No. 1, put the Eagles one point from clinching the match.
Â
Will Sides held that off by gutting out a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win over Bryce Cline at No. 6.
Â
That made the team score 4-4, and set Rivera up to be the hero.
Â
The freshman won the opening set, 7-5, but after dropping the second, 7-6 (5), Vitali needed a 6-4 win in the third to defeat Matthew Gordon and clinch the squad's first-ever league win over the Eagles.
UP NEXT
Shenandoah hosts Ferrum in another ODAC matchup Friday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. This is also a doubleheader with the SU women.
