Baseball Shuts Out Hampden-Sydney

Dean Tosses Complete Game in 14-0 Win

WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 16 Shenandoah University opened up its ODAC Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon with a 14-0 game one victory over Hampden-Sydney.

Shenandoah (27-8) now needs to win just one of the two remaining games versus the Tigers (17-13) to advance to next weekend's tournament semi-final round.

IN DEPTH

The Hornets provided all of the offense that starting pitcher Tad Dean would need with a six-run first.

Stepping up to the plate following a 24-minute rain delay, Keegan Woolford put the first runs on the board with a two-run home run to right. Woolford's two-out blast, his 12th of the season, plated Grant Thompson. Thompson had laced a one-out single to left center for the Hornets first hit of the contest.

Four unearned runs followed with Haden Madagan, Anthony Ward, and Matt Moon all driving in runs with singles.

The six-spot was more than enough for Dean (5-1), who tossed his third complete game of the spring and second shutout by scattering four hits and one walk over the nine innings. Dean struck out seven and threw 77 strikes in his 114-pitch outing, benefitted from two double plays.

All nine SU starters had least one hit with Thompson leading the way with a 4-for-5 afternoon. Madagan, Henry Delavergne, and Colby Martin all had three hits with Madagan hitting a three-run home run in the seventh.

UP NEXT

The two teams play game two Friday evening. H-SC is the home team in game two.
