Hornets Win, 5-4

FREDERICKSBURG – Shenandoah University ran its field hockey winning streak to four games with a 5-4 non-league victory at Mary Washington Wednesday afternoon.

Shenandoah (4-1) took the early lead with a Kelsey Jones goal just 2:44 in versus the Eagles, but had to rally as UMW tallied twice in the second quarter.

IN BRIEF

Farren Winter brought the game back to level with her unassisted goal 3:31 into third before Lauren Tyre put SU on top to stay five minutes later.

Tyre's goal, her first of the season, came off of a Cassidy Morrison assist and put Shenandoah up 4-3.

The two teams traded single goals in the fourth with Jones' goal at 56:30 putting the Hornets up by two, 5-3.

Elizabeth Ranberger set up Jones for her seventh goal of the season.

Mary Washington had a 25-16 advantage in shots but SU goalkeeper Katie Garman had 13 saves to help her club to a fourth straight win since opening with loss at now No. 2 Johns Hopkins.

The Eagles doubled up SU, 10-5, on penalty corners.

QUOTES FROM COACH

"Today was a great battle that wil surely prepare us for ODAC play next month," said Head Coach Ashley Smeltzer-Kraft. "We fought through a physical contest, made a few strong defensive stands at the end and found a way to finish the ball when we needed to. We had a few things to improve and move on to Saturday's game."

UP NEXT

Shenandoah continues this road trip on with a 1 p.m. non-league game at Stevenson Saturday afternoon.
