Bridgewater Rallies for 23-17 Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Host Bridgewater College rallied for a 23-17 ODAC football victory over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field.

Shenandoah (4-1, 1-1 ODAC) led 14-0 one play into the second quarter but saw the Eagles (5-0, 2-0) score 14 points in the fourth quarter to steal the victory.

IN DEPTH
Both of the Bridgewater touchdowns came off of Shenandoah turnovers. After turning the Eagles over on the 19 at the 12:08 mark of the fourth, SU threw an interception two plays later that was returned to the Hornets 2.

BC needed just one play to score its first touchdown of the game.

The Hornets then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving the hosts the ball on the Shenandoah 20. It took Bridgewater six plays to score this time, and after a successful two-point conversion, the Eagles had their first lead of the day at 23-17.

Shenandoah's next drive ended on a turnover on downs at the BC 40, and after SU held Bridgewater to a three-and-out, the Hornets took over with 2:35 remaining on its own 20.

Coach Scott Yoder's club drove all the way to the Bridgewater 18, where it faced a 3rd-and-1 with 26 seconds remaining. An incomplete pass followed on third down, and the fourth down completion to Ethan Bigbee was halted for a four-yard loss to secure the comeback win for Bridgewater.

Shenandoah dominated the stat sheet, outgaining Bridgewater 361-159 and possessing the ball for an even 34 minutes. Rashadeen Byrd Jr. did most of the damage, gaining 121 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries. Markell Jackson added 66 yards on 15 carries.

Byrd Jr. scored the Hornets first touchdown, a three-yard rush on 2nd and goal at the 6:21 mark of the first.

One play into the second, quarterback Steven Hugney hit Jaden Roberts for a 31-yard TD strike.

Bridgewater clawed back with field goals of 27-,47-, and 33-yards before using the two short fields gained on turnovers to score the fourth quarter touchdowns.

Keyshawn Wilder and Ben Burgan both had eight tackles for SU.

UP NEXT
Shenandoah returns home next Saturday for a 1 p.m. ODAC contest versus Guilford.
