Catholic Escapes Versus Men's Hoops

Hornets Drop 69-67 Decision

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Catholic University of America used an outstanding second half shooting performance to key a 69-67 non-league men's basketball victory over host Shenandoah.

Shenandoah (1-2) led, 34-30, at the break, but Catholic (4-0) had an answer in the second half.

IN BRIEF
After shooting 43 percent (12 of 28) from the field in the opening stanza, the Cardinals shot 55 percent (12 of 22) over the final 20 minutes to erase that four-point deficit and hold on for the two-point victory.

Down three in the waning moments, the Hornets got a Davion Roberts runner in the lane to make it 66-65 with 12 seconds remaining.

SU fouled on the ensuing possession and Catholic hit both free throws, resetting it to a three-point contest with nine seconds left.

CUA fouled on the Hornets next possession, and Malik Jordan hit both to again cut the deficit to one. Following another Shenandoah foul, Catholic made one of two from the charity stripe with four seconds left, but Jordan's desperation '3' from 25-feet was blocked as time expired.

The late game flurry capped a contest with nine ties and five lead changes.

Jordan led all scored with 21 points while Landon Russ added 16 and Roberts 14 for the hosts.

Sean Neylon, who hit those two crucial free throws with nine seconds remaining, had 18 points for Catholic.

CUA had a 30-27 edge on the boards and shot 48 percent (24 of 50) to the Hornets 35 percent (21 of 60).
