GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team completed a successful weekend road trip Sunday with a 70-50 ODAC win at Guilford College.
Â
The victory earns Shenandoah (17-5, 11-5 ODAC) a sweep of the season series versus Guilford (6-14, 4-11) and ensures the squad of its most successful season since the 2006-07 squad finished 17-9.
Â
IN BRIEF
After finding itself behind by one, 17-16, at the end of one, the Hornets blitzed Guilford with 23 second quarter points while holding the Quakers to just nine.
Â
Now with a 39-26 lead, Shenandoah expanded that advantage by an additional five points in the third quarter and another two in the fourth.
Â
The Hornets shot 54 percent from the field in that pivotal second quarter, making seven of 12 attempts, and saw GC miss 14 of its 16 field goal tries (13 percent) over the same span. A 10-0 run from the 8:28 to 3:58 marks gave SU the lead for good – six of the 10 points came from the line as
Ragan Johnson,
Terese Greene, and
Madisen Kimble all went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe during the spurt.
Â
Olivia Weinel got the run started with a bucket at 8:28 before Greene finished it with a fastbreak layup nearly four minutes later.
Â
Shenandoah held a double-digit lead for the final 19:05 of the contest
Â
Weinel and
Sarah Sondrol both had 11 points with
Shawnise Campbell adding 10 along with a game-high 14 rebounds. Those 14 boards helped SU to a 47-27 advantage on the glass.
Â
SU also shot 41 percent from the field for the game (24-of-59) and held Guilford to 27 percent (14-of-52).
Â
NOTABLE
The 17 wins ties the 2006-07 team for the third-best season in program history and the Hornets next victory ties them with the 1999-2000 squad for No. 2 all-time. Coach
Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club needs four more wins to tie the 1987-88 team's program record of 21 wins. That team finished 21-6.
