Women's Hoops Wins ODAC Title with 56-43 Win over R-MC

SALEM, Va. – Oops, they did it again.

No. 4 Shenandoah University ran through the Nos. 5, 1, and 2 seeds this weekend on its way to its second ODAC Women's Basketball Championship in the past four years.

Sunday, it was No. 2 Randolph-Macon going down as SU claimed its fourth overall conference title of the university era with a 56-43 win over the Yellow Jackets.

IN BRIEF
Shenandoah (22-5) sets a program-record with its 22nd victory, breaking the record originally set by the 1987-88 Shenandoah College and Conservatory squad.

After a slow start that saw SU score just six points in the first quarter and only 18 in the first half, the Hornets exploded for 25 points in the third to take a lead they would not relinquish over Macon.

Trailing by two, 20-18, early in the third, Shenandoah scored 15 of the game's next 20 points to lead, 33-25, by the 3:35 mark.

R-MC (19-7) answered with a 5-1 run to make it 34-30 a minute later, but Shenandoah was able to counterattack.

Seven straight points in a span of 74 seconds pushed the Hornets lead out to 11 points, 41-30, and put SU totally in control. Macon would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

The final moments were anticlimactic as Shenandoah scored seven of the game's final nine points.

Sierra St. Cyr, the 2022 ODAC Defensive Player of the Year, led the victors with 14 points with second year Madisen Kimble adding 11.

NOTABLE
  • St. Cyr, Olivia Weinel, and Ragan Johnson, all now two-time ODAC champions, were named to the All-Tournament team with St. Cyr taking home Most Outstanding Player honors.
  • Those three women, along with Brooke Riley, Sarah Sondrol, and Diandra Mundle, become the first players in program history to win a pair of league titles.
  • The NCAA Tournament berth is the fourth in program history after 1996, 2000, and 2019.
  • The 1996 and 2000 teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament as Dixie (now USA South) Champions.
  • The 1996 team won its tournament as the No. 7 seed, the 2000 as the No. 3, and the 2019 as the No. 8.
