Men's Soccer Ties Hampden-Sydney with Second Half Goal

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team gained a point in the ODAC standings with a 1-1 tie at home Wednesday night versus Hampden-Sydney.

Trailing in the second, the Hornets (5-3-3, 2-1-2 ODAC) got a goal in the 67th minute to force the draw with the Tigers (5-5-3, 2-3-1).

IN BRIEF

Shenandoah started the game strong as Kyle Welch and Chinedu Ikem created scoring opportunities that were stopped by the Tigers' goalkeeper. Hampden-Sydney took advantage of the saves and transitioned that to a goal in the 11th minute to take the lead.

In the next eight minutes of the game, the visitors continued to make saves as Shenandoah looked to tie the contest before heading into the half. Shots from Ikem, Nathan Yared, and Devin Kohout were all saved, with the Kohout shot being the last shot on goal for either team in the first.

In the first portion of the second half both teams traded the possession often. With the teams playing hot potato the Hornets got a throw-in just to the right of their offensive box. SU took full advantage of the good positioning and Kohout one-timed a shot from just outside the box for the equalizing goal.

Hampden-Sydney tried to take the lead late with a shot by its leading goal scorer Mo Wumpini but Shenandoah goalie Travis Jett stopped the shot between the legs while sitting on the turf. That big save by Jett proved to be the final chance for the two competitors, helping SU grab a point in the standings.

With four conference games remaining in the season for the Hornets, they are just three points away from achieving a program record for conference points in a season, since joining the ODAC in 2012.
