Hornets Swat Yellow Jackets in 4-1 Field Hockey Win

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah field hockey team continued their conference-winning ways, with conference foe Randolph-Macon College, Saturday afternoon in front of a packed Homecoming crowd.  The Hornets (9-2, 2-1) now sit in third in the conference, after the 4-1 win over the visiting Yellow Jackets (6-5, 2-2.)

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Shenandoah outshot the Yellow Jackets 21-3 and had the advantage of shots on the cage with 14-3.
Taylor Swann got the start and stopped two out of the three shots she faced.
The Hornets had the edge on penalty corners with a 7-2 advantage.
Gracie Wilkerson scored her eighth goal of the year and also assisted on Cassidy Morrison's second goal of the year.
Farren Winter chipped in with her fourth of the season while Claudia Lenahan scored her sixth.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets had a very balanced attack throughout the game scoring one goal in each period.  Shenandoah was able to get five shots off in the first period and held Randolph-Macon to one shot, which Taylor Swann easily stopped.  The Hornets earned a penalty corner with under 30 seconds to play, Camryn DeLeva played a ball to the top of the circle and Gracie Wilkerson fired a shot that beat the goalie to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead going into the second.

Early in the second, Cassidy Morrison was issued a green card, and the Hornets did a fantastic job of killing off that penalty.  Shenandoah earned a penalty corner, while being a player down and just missed increasing the lead to two goals.  Right after the green card was killed off, the Hornets capitalized on their second corner of the afternoon.  This time DeLeva found Farren Winter at the top of the circle and the senior found the cage for the fourth time this season.

After the break, the Hornets continued to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets, as a trio of Hornets would swarm in front of the cage, Claudia Lenahan would slip past the defense and clean up the bouncing ball for her sixth goal of the season.

Early in the fourth, looking to tack an insurance goal, Gracie Wilkerson would go storming down the left side and send a beautiful ball into the middle of the circle which found a streaking Cassidy Morrison for her second goal of the season.  Unfortunately, the Hornets could not preserve the shutout, as the Yellow Jackets capitalized off of a penalty corner and then Maggie Muldoon cleaned up a bouncing ball and found the back of the cage.
