Washington and Lee Defeats Football in Season Finale

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team concluded its 2023 season with a 40-21 loss to Washington and Lee University on Saturday at home in an ODAC match.

After recognizing its senior class prior to the game, the Hornets (5-5, 3-4 ODAC) went on to score on their opening drive but the Generals (8-2, 6-1) scored 33 unanswered points to pull away in their win.

The Generals, who controlled the clock for the entire game, went on a 5:56 drive to begin the game where they only threw the ball twice on the 12-play trip down the field. They capped it off with a lateral toss to running back Jacob Romero for a touchdown.

Shenandoah started its day by gaining 24 yards through its first three plays. Steven Hugney and AJ Maxwell had runs of nine and 15, respectively, to start their afternoons. Across the next five plays, Hugney completed two passes to Issac Tucker a total of 21 yards. Those four gains set up a Hughey rushing touchdown to tie the contest at seven.

Washington and Lee scored touchdowns on its next two drives while running the ball 15 times during the drives. The Generals missed both of their point-after attempts wide ride which made the score 19-7 heading into the half.

In the third quarter, the Generals added two more TDs to push their lead to 34-7. They outgained Shenandoah 143-39 in the 15 minutes of the third.

After Washington and Lee added one more score in the fourth, Shenandoah went on to score touchdowns on two consecutive drives. The first was a Jalen Redfearn rushing TD from eight yards out. The final touchdown came on the Hornets' final play of 2023 as Hugney connected with Caleb Reedy for the score. Scott Martin made the extra point, as he'd go 3-3 on the day.

On defense, Matt Conroy made 17 total tackles to finish the season with 115 to put him near the top of the SU record books behind Ben Burgan who holds the record for single tackles in a season with 135 in 2021.

The Hornets have finished their 2023 season and open up the 2024 season on the road at Methodist on September 7, 2024.
