HOW IT HAPPENED
Terese Greene scored the opening basket of the game, and the Hornets never looked back. Shenandoah dominated the first quarter and outscored Randolph 19-6. Shenandoah got first-quarter buckets from Greene,
Shawnise Campbell,
Emily Williams and
Kayla Maxson. The Hornets shot 57.1% from the floor in the stanza while holding Randolph to 25%.
Randolph came out in the second quarter looking to get back into the game but for every basket the WildCats scored, the Hornets had an answer.
Kayla Maxson started the scoring for the Hornets second quarter, by drilling a three to increase the lead to 14 points. Randolph was able to get the game closer by taking advantage of going 10-10 from the free-throw line, but
Shawnise Campbell and
Maddie Kimble had clutch baskets to keep the momentum in favor of the Hornets.
After the break, the Hornets continued their fast start when
Terese Greene drilled a corner three to increase the lead back to 9 points. Once again, every basket the WildCats scored, the Hornets had an answer. Randolph made a few final pushes, but
Shawnise Campbell converted a three-point play, and Maddie Kimbell hit a layup to secure the win for the Hornets to move to 3-0 in conference play.
Coach Smeltzer-Kraft had this to say about the win, "we knew this was going to be a battle, really happy with the way we played for 40 minutes. I think we defended at a really high level and were able to get great shots against the zone."
