Hornets Defeat Eastern Mennonite, 70-45

WINCHESTER, Va. – The seventh-seeded Shenandoah University women's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2023 ODAC Tournament after defeating No. 10 Eastern Mennonite, 70-45, Monday night.

The Hornets (17-9) went on a 20-0 run that helped them seal the deal in their win over the Royals (9-17).

IN BRIEF

The bank was open for SU as Sydney Shepos hit a late three in the first quarter and followed that up with a layup to end the period. Shenandoah led the visitors 22-11 after one.

SU took a 16-point lead before the Royals countered with a 14-3 run to end the first half and make it a four-point, 31-27, game at the break. Shenandoah began the stanza by making its first two shots, but EMU kept them to 18% shooting after that as they cut the SU lead to that four-point margin.

Unfortunately for the visitors, this would prove to be their high-water mark. The Hornets took command of the game over the initial 8:40 of the second half as they scored 20 straight points to push the lead out to 24 points. Eastern Mennonite's Lauryn Moore ended its scoreless run with back-to-back '3's to end the third with Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft's club up, 51-33.

The fourth quarter was capped off with Kayla Maxson hitting the game's final shot to provide the 70-45 final.

Madisen Kimble led SU to its win with 19 points and Shawnise Campbell assisted with the matter, posting a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Terese Greene finished with 16 points to give the victors a third woman in double-figures.
