Women's Soccer Season Ends in ODAC Quarterfinals

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The No. 6 Shenandoah University women's soccer team's season ends with a 3-2 loss at No. 3 Virginia Wesleyan University in the 2024 ODAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (10-9-2) scored two goals in the game's final 20 minutes but were kept without a shot on goal following the second goal, as the Marlins (9-5-3) held on to defeat SU in the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

RECAP

The Marlins took advantage of an early corner and tapped the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Nine minutes later, Virginia Wesleyan was on the attack again and turned a pass into a header for a two-goal lead.

McKenna Newcome and Ellie Ajello picked up the first two shots on goal for SU in the 35th and 44th minutes, respectively, but were both stopped the VWU's goalie, keeping the game at 2-0 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, Kasie Kilmer made three saves for the Hornets but the Marlins were able to get past SU again to make it a three-score game in the 67th minute.

Peyton Lubinsky ended the Marlins shutout attempt with SU's first goal in the 72nd minute. The goal marked Lubinsky's third in five games.

Coming off a corner kick, Chandler Gallant found Audrey Atwell for a second Shenandoah goal just five minutes after Lubinsky's goal, bringing the Hornets within one and under 15 minutes left in the match. However, VWU flipped the ball back to their side of the field and ended the Hornets' momentum to end the game.

SEASON RECAP

Shenandoah ended the season with 10 wins which is the 10th time the Hornets have had double-digit wins in a season under the direction of Elizabeth Pike '11. Pike ends the season sitting at 175 career wins and is just three wins away from 100 career wins in conference play.

First-year McKenna Newcome led the team with eight goals which currently puts her in the top 10 for the ODAC. Kylie Malone, a sophomore, was second on the team with six goals.

Newcome also led the team with 20 points while sitting second in assists with four. Chandler Gallant led the way in helpers with seven.

Kayla Jenkins joins Newcome, Malone, and Gallant as the only four Hornets with at least double-digit points this year.

As a team, Shenandoah scored 49 goals for a goal differential of plus-17.

Goalie Kasie Kilmer played every minute for the Hornets and made 65 saves with eight shutouts. Both totals are the most by one SU goal in a single season since 2016.
