Women's Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller at Home

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team earned its second five-set victory in as many days on Saturday afternoon in a home match against Guilford College.

The Hornets (10-7, 6-2 ODAC) clinched the match against the Quakers (12-8, 4-5) in an extended fifth set, 23-21. The six conference wins are the most for the program since 2015.

RECAP

Shenandoah fell behind 10-6 in the first set, but tied the frame at 10 on three straight Hannah Hylton kills and an error by Guilford. The Hornets took the momentum and gained a late 22-18 lead; however, Guilford was able to come within one. Leading 23-22, SU took the first set thanks to kills from Alanna Washington and Amber Shifflett.

Guilford won the second set, 25-16, behind an 18-7 advantage. Shenandoah responded in the third with an 11-6 lead. The advantage grew to seven, 15-8, off a 4-0 run, with three kills and a solo block by Kamryn Keasey. The Quakers fought back and made it 18-17, with the Hornets still leading. Shenandoah won the set, 15-20, with a 7-3 run.

After Guilford forced a fifth set with a 25-15 win in the fourth, the visitors took a small 3-2 lead in the final frame. After four ties in the front half of the fifth, Guilford used a 4-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Shenandoah responded with a 6-1 run to hold a 12-11 advantage. 

Throughout the rest of the fifth, the teams traded the lead, with Guilford holding a 21-20 lead and match point. However, Shenandoah avoided the loss with a final 3-0 run, with two kills from Shifflett to give them the win.

Hylton reached 400 kills in a Hornets uniform with a team-high 18 kills in the match. Amanda Ingrassia and Vanessa Rodriguez led the team in assists with 28 and 27, respectively.

Shenandoah plays at Bridgewater College this Wednesday in a 7 p.m. ODAC contest.
