Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with 2-1 Victory

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team celebrated its senior day with a 2-1 non-conference win over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon at home.

The Hornets (2-3-2) carried a late first-half goal, which put them up 2-1, into the second half and made five saves in the final 45 minutes to hang on and defeat the Raiders (5-2-1).

RECAP

Seniors Tarick Kamara, Xavier Thompson, and Aaron Yancey each got the start for the Hornets, but it was sophomore Nick Mattiace who started the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute, assisted by Jarbin Rodriguez. However, it took just 17 seconds for Rutgers-Newark to tie the game at one.

For the next 30 minutes, each team only had one shot on target as Yoha Mulugeta picked up the scoring chance on the Hornets' offensive end. Towards the end of the first, just minutes after subbing onto the field, Grant Otto picked up an assist on a goal from defender Dylan Johnson, giving the Hornets the lead once again.

Each team's defense played an aggressive second half, holding each other without a shot on goal for the first 35 minutes. The Raiders started to rattle off shots in the final eight minutes of play as they looked to tie the game.

Jake Ziervogel made four saves in those final eight minutes, while the Hornets' defense provided a team save.
