Men's Volleyball Swept by Roanoke in Road ODAC Match

SALEM, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team was defeated 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Roanoke College in an ODAC match.

The Hornets (1-2, 0-2 ODAC), trailing 2-0, looked to force a fourth set, forcing nine ties in the third, but it was the Maroons (2-0, 1-0) winning the match with a sweep.

A service ace by Turner Hare gave Shenandoah a 2-0 lead, and kills by Simon Bellenbaum and Kailen Dmitruk ensured SU maintained the advantage early. However, a 7-1 and an 8-0 run by the Maroons flipped the momentum and gave the home team a 22-9 lead. The Maroons went on to win the first frame, 25-15.

Roanoke grabbed control of the second set with a 12-2 lead, which then quickly grew to a 22-7 advantage. Kills from Dmitruk, Finnegan Martin, and Jahmai-Kaream Maurice anchored a 9-2 run for the Hornets, which cut their deficit down to eight. The Maroons ended the SU run and claimed the second set, 25-16.

Another service ace by Hare, along with an error by the Maroons, gave Shenandoah a 3-2 lead in the third. A 5-1 run by the Maroons gave them a three-point lead in the middle of the third, 11-8, but consecutive blocks involving Bellenbaum helped SU tie the set at 12.

Roanoke responded with another multi-point streak to regain the lead, but the Hornets were able to tie the frame at 17, 18, and 20. With the score even at 20, Roanoke closed out the match on a 5-3 run.

Dmitruk led the Hornets with eight kills, with Hare having a team-high 13 assists. Defensively, Martin had 10 digs and Bellenbaum had six block assists, both team-highs.
