WINCHESTER, VA - The No. 23 Shenandoah University Field Hockey Team overcame a slow start to take down Roanoke 5-1 on Wednesday night. The Hornets (10-2, 3-1 ODAC) scored their first goal late in the first quarter, and allowed a Maroon (4-7, 1-2 ODAC) goal early in the second before scoring four unanswered to take firm control of the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was only fitting that the nation's best corner-taking team scored its first goal of the game on a penalty corner in the 14th minute.
Emily Engle found
Camryn DeLeva for the games opening strike.Â
Roanoke responded quickly, scoring only 55 seconds into the second quarter on a penalty corner of their own.
Three minutes later, Shenandoah would reclaim the lead on a two-shot sequence that saw Engle take a shot that was saved, then
Kaitlyn Nakamura collecting the deflection and finding
Reagan Flory for what would be the game-winning goal.
The ODAC's leader in points found her first of two goals in the game in the 21st minute off of an assist by
Reagan Flory.
The Flory-Weigle connection would find itself again in the 38th minute. The tandem each collected four points on the day.
The final goal of the game came off of another penalty corner in the 45th minute, when
Ava Fields inserted to
Rylin McCloskey, who stopped the ball for an
Ella Robbins rip from the top of the circle.
Cassidy Alexander got the start and win in goal.
