Yellow Jackets Sneak Past No. 22 Field Hockey Behind Late Goal

ASHLAND, Va. - The No. 22 Shenandoah University field hockey team played at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon and was defeated 1-0 in ODAC play.

The Yellow Jackets (9-6, 4-2 ODAC) scored the only goal of the game with less than three minutes left in the fourth to get past the Hornets (12-3, 5-2).

RECAP

Despite being outshot 6-1 and not having any penalty corners in the first two quarters, the Hornets were able to keep the game scoreless thanks to three saves by Cassidy Alexander. Kierney Weigle had the lone shot on goal for SU in the first half, with her chance coming nearly 14 minutes into the game.

Midway through the third quarter, Shenandoah picked up its first penalty corner of the game. SU had Ava Fields take the corners and work the ball up to Camryn DeLeva each time, but the Yellow Jackets were able to make two saves on DeLeva, keeping the game tied heading into the fourth.

Within the first three minutes of the final quarter of play, Shenandoah had added four more shots and penalty corners, but were stopped on each chance. This allowed the Yellow Jackets to convert on a penalty corner of their own for the game-winning goal with 2:31 remaining.

Alexander finished the game with five saves, and DeLeva led the team with three shots.

UP NEXT

The Hornets have a week off before going to the University of Lynchburg next Saturday at 1 p.m. for the regular season finale.
