Football Defeated by HSC on Homecoming

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team was defeated 30-14 by Hampden-Sydney at home in its 2026 homecoming contest on Saturday afternoon in ODAC action.

The Tigers (3-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter after trailing the Hornets (2-2, 0-1), 14-10. During that fourth quarter, the Hornets were held to 35 offensive yards, while the Tigers had over 150 yards during that span and held on to the ball for over ten minutes.

RECAP
Hampden-Sydney went down on its first drive and scored a touchdown on a 4-yard pass, giving the visiting team a 7-0 edge.

Plays of 15-plus yards by Aidan McCloskey and Caleb Weston set the Hornets up in Tigers' territory on the ensuing drive. Later in the drive, Mehki Brown connected with JoJo Sovula for a seven-yard fourth-down conversion to keep the drive alive. The very next play, Roge't Walker caught a 19-yard pass for a touchdown, tying the game at seven at the end of the first.

The Hornets held the Tigers to a field goal on the first drive of the second quarter, as HSC led 10-7. A 50-yard kickoff return by Walker, plus 28 yards of penalties for the Tigers, set up the Hornets inside the red zone. However, a fumble on the very next play gave the ball right back to the Tigers.

Despite the fumble, the Hornets quickly got possession of the ball thanks to their defense forcing a punt from midfield. SU proceeded to go on an 11-play, 84-yard drive which ended in a 15-yard receiving touchdown by Carter Rodriguez. Brown went 6-for-6 and 63 yards during the drive.

With the opening half capped off by a Tayton Smaldone interception, the Hornets were able to secure a 14-10 lead heading into halftime.

Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter, and HSC's defense forced two fourth-quarter three-and-outs, helping its offense put 20 fourth-quarter points on the board for the win.

During the second half, Shenandoah's defense picked up a fumble recovery by Jacob Marion and a blocked extra-point kick by Steven Jones. Across the entire game, SU's defense was anchored by 19 tackles from Jaren Mitchell, which is tied for seventh all-time in a single game for SU. Steven Jones and Nick English also had double-digit tackles.

Mekhi Brown finished the day with 218 yards and two touchdowns on 19-for-29 passing. Brown's top target was Rodriguez, who had five catches for 75 yards.

The Hornets rushed for over 100 yards, led by McCloskey's 74 yards on 18 touches.
