Men's Volleyball Tames Lions in Non-Conference Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team defeated Penn State Altoona 3-0 at home on Friday night in non-conference play.

The Hornets (4-6) hit a season-high .326 as a team on 86 total attacks against the Lions (3-9). Kailen Dmitruk and Jahmai-Kaream Maurice tied for the team-high 10 kills.

RECAP

Turner Hare scored the first point of the evening with a service ace, but the Lions responded with a 9-5 lead in the first. The Hornets tied the frame at nine with a 4-0 run behind three kills as a team, including two from Kaden Odberg. SU then went on to grab a 15-11 lead off a block from Simon Bellenbaum and Dmitruk.

With the Hornets up four, Altoona rallied to tie the opening set at 15, but SU gained two points from Finnegan Martin to take an 18-15 lead. However, the Lions were once again able to tie the set. With the set tied at 19, Shenandoah went on a 6-1 run to win the first, 25-20.

Penn State Altoona led early in the second at 6-4, but a 5-0 run by Shenandoah gave them the lead for the remainder of the set. The visitors then pulled within one, 19-18, but SU scored the next five points to earn set point. A service error by the Lions gave SU the 25-19 win in the second.

SU gained the first point in the third and didn't allow the Lions to hold the lead at any point in the set. Alex Schoenen had two service aces that helped SU lead by five, 11-6, before they grabbed a seven-point advantage at 16-9, thanks to three consecutive assists by Hare. Shenandoah had six more kills as a team in the third, helping them complete the sweep.

Shenandoah begins a four-game road stand on Tuesday with an ODAC contest at Eastern Mennonite University.
