Men's Volleyball Wins Inaugural Home Match

WINCHESTER, Va. - In its first-ever home match, the Shenandoah University men's volleyball team defeated ODAC foe Bridgewater College 3-1 on Tuesday evening. The victory also marked the program's first-ever conference victory.

The Hornets (3-5, 1-4 ODAC) picked up wins in the first two sets, 28-26, 25-19, and were forced to a fourth set by the Eagles (2-6, 0-1), but rallied to win the match in the fourth, 25-19.

RECAP

The Hornets used the home court advantage early to grab a 12-4 lead in the first with kills from Jahmai-Kaream Maurice, Alex Schoenen, and San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon. Shenandoah kept the lead all the way to 24-17, but couldn't close out the set just yet, as the Eagles responded with an 8-0 run that gave them a one-point lead.

Kailen Dmitruk tied the frame at 25 for SU, but BC took the lead again. Down to their final first-set point, the Hornets rattled off three consecutive points to win the set, 28-26, off a block from Kaden Odberg and Schoenen.

SU grabbed the momentum first in the second, leading 6-1 thanks to multiple errors by the Eagles. BC cut its deficit to one, but SU used a 7-2 run to extend the lead to six. In the latter half of the set, a handful of errors by the visitors and multiple kills from Schoenen assisted the Hornets in going up 2-0 in the match.

Bridgewater avoided the sweep, forcing a fourth set, by winning the third, 25-18. Shenandoah rebounded well from the loss in the third and picked up the first three points in the fourth. SU's lead grew to five, but the Eagles made it a one-point set on multiple occasions. Leading 14-13, SU added on to its slim lead with a 5-1 run, earning scoring from two kills, an ace, and a block.

The Eagles were unable to get their deficit back to one, with SU maintaining the lead. An ace by Dmitruk, followed by a Schoenen solo block, gave the Hornets a 24-18 lead. Odberg set up Maurice for the final point of the evening, closing out SU's first home win as a team.

Dmitruk had a team-high 11 kills, followed by Schoenen's 10. Odberg provided 16 assists for the Hornets. Jordan Griffin led the defense with 13 digs.
