Men's Volleyball Sweeps ODAC Tri-Match

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team picked up a pair of ODAC wins against Bridgewater College and Eastern Mennonite University in a tri-match hosted at Bridgewater on Saturday.

The Hornets (8-10, 3-9 ODAC) won both matches 3-1, defeating the Royals (11-13, 6-6) 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, prior to downing the Eagles (5-22, 2-10) 25-20, 28-30, 25-13, 25-21.

EMU RECAP

The Hornets fell behind 6-2 in the first but rallied back to grab a 10-8 lead off a kill by Kaden Odberg. However, the Royals bounced back and took a 21-18 lead. A kill and block by Alex Schoenen helped the Hornets tie the set at 21, before closing out the frame on a 4-1 run for the win.

After the Royals won the close second set, the Hornets jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the second. The lead grew out to seven with a 17-10 lead. Simon Bellenbaum provided a kill that gave SU a 24-19 lead, but EMU didn't go quietly, coming within two. The Hornets kept the Royals from taking the third set with a kill by San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon.

The Royals led 10-3 in the fourth, but a 6-0 run by the Hornets powered them to tie the set at 12. A Royals error, plus another Garrett-Hymon kill, gave the Hornets the lead for good at 20-18, before a 3-0 run ended the match.

Four SU players had at least 10 kills, led by Finnegan Martin's 14.

BRIDGEWATER RECAP

With a back-and-forth first set, the Hornets gained a late lead, 21-17, with a 7-0 run. The run was led by multiple errors from Bridgewater. The Hornets held the Eagles to just three more points in the first to win by five. The Eagles won a thrilling second set, 30-28, which included six lead changes and 12 ties.

The third set was controlled early by the Hornets, thanks to a 10-3 lead. Bridgewater mounted a comeback that ended up being halted by a 6-0 Shenandoah run that gave the Hornets a 19-11 lead. A Kaden Odberg kill, and San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon's service ace helped the Hornets win by 12.

In the fourth, with the set tied at 13, Shenandoah gained the lead for good with a 5-2 run. Bridgewater came within one on two separate occasions, but the Hornets ended the match on a 3-0 run with Alex Schoenen scoring the final point of the evening.

Kailen Dmitruk and Finnegan Martin tied for a team-high 16 kills. Turner Hare provided the team with 32 assists and 14 digs.
