Men's Volleyball Splits ODAC Tri-Match at RMC

ASHLAND, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team split a tri-match at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, falling to the hosts 3-0, before defeating Averett University 3-0 in a pair of ODAC games.

RMC RECAP

A kill by San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon tied the first set for the Hornets (9-12, 4-10 ODAC) 2-2, but the Yellow Jackets (25-4, 13-0) went on a 6-0 run to grab the lead. Alex Schoenen helped cut SU's deficit to three, but that's the smallest it would get for the rest of the set. RMC took the opening frame 25-15.

Kailen Dmitruk and Simon Bellenbaum teamed up for a block that gave SU a 2-0 lead in the second after Dmitruk opened the set with a kill. Kills by Garrett-Hymon and Schoenen kept SU with the lead, until a 6-1 run by RMC flipped the lead to the home team. The Yellow Jackets held the lead for the remainder of the set, winning 25-16.

A Dmitruk block tied the third at two and later a kill by the first-year kept the frame even. Despite keeping the set close, the Hornets never held the lead and couldn't force a tie for the rest of the set, with the Yellow Jackets winning 25-16.

AVERETT RECAP

The Hornets grabbed the lead first in the match, but the Cougars (5-19, 0-11) took the advantage at 5-4. The Hornets tied the set at five, six, and seven before finally regaining the lead on a Tuner Hare service ace. The back-and-forth set saw nine more ties and four additional lead changes, with the Hornets eventually able to win, 25-21, behind a San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon ace that ended the set.

Shenandoah fell behind in the early going of the second, before taking a 9-8 lead thanks to kills from Hare and Finnegan Martin. An error tied the set at nine, but the Hornets responded with a 9-2 run to take an 18-11 lead. Down 22-16, the Cougars cut their deficit to two, but the Hornets were able to hang on and win, 25-21.

Martin and Garrett-Hymon kick-started the third with a pair of kills for the Hornets, allowing them to take a 5-2 lead. The duo then led the charge on a 4-0 run that extended SU's lead out to six, 9-3. The lead stayed around six for most of the set, until Averett cut its deficit to two, 19-17. A 5-0 run for the Hornets helped keep the lead and let SU take the 25-18 set win, clinching the sweep.

Martin and Garrett-Hymon tied for a team-high 11 kills.
