Men's Volleyball Defeated Twice at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's volleyball team traveled down to the University of Lynchburg on Friday and was defeated 3-1 in match one and two of a doubleheader. The first contest was a makeup from the teams originally scheduled contest in Winchester on Feburary 7.

LYN (6-4, 4-3 ODAC) won the final three sets of the first match, while winning the first two sets of match two to help them to victory over SU (5-9, 1-8). Five of the eight sets were determined by five or less points.

MATCH ONE RECAP

Kills by Kailen Dmitruk and Finnegan Martin helped SU grab an early 5-4 lead, with Martin's kill sparking a small run. Lynchburg snagged the lead from Shenandoah, but the vistors were able to maintain the lead for good in the first thanks to a 4-0 run that put them up 12-8. With Shenandoah leading by six, 18-12, Lynchburg pulled within two. However, another kill from Martin plus a point by San'Tonio Garrett-Hymon put SU up 20-16. Shenandoah won the opening set of the night, 25-21, thanks to another Martin killl.

Back-to-back blocks by Simon Bellenbaum and Dmitruk gave Shenandoah its first lead of the second set, with the teams trading points for five early ties. Tied at 10, Lynchburg went on a 9-3 run to pull away. A kill by Martin and a Lynchburg service error helped Shenandoah cut its deficit to three but the home team earned two final kills to win the second, 25-20.

Lynchburg went up 2-1 in the match with a 25-19 win in the third. The home team then led 9-5 in the fourth, but SU responded to take a late 24-21 advantage. SU only needed one point to force a fifth set, but LYN came right back to tie the set at 24. Alex Schoenen then gave SU a 25-24, once again nearly forcing a fifth set, but LYN won the next three points to take the opening match.

Martin had 15 kills in the match, while Turner Hare and Kaden Odbeerg provided a combined 38 assists on the team's 43 kills.

MATCH TWO RECAP

Three Lynchburg service errors and kills by Martin and Schoenen let SU take a slim lead early in the opening frame. The set would end up tied at seven, which led the Lynchburg 5-0 run to take the lead. The home team held on to the lead for the rest of the set, winning 25-18.

The second set was back-and-forth as well, but Shenandoah was able to hold a three-point lead, 17-14, in the middle of the tight set. Another 5-0 run by LYN flipped the lead to its side, 19-17. Shenandoah tried to force another tie but Lynchburg hung on to win 25-23.

Shenandoah grabbed momentum in the first portion of the third set thanks to a 6-0 run, aided by two kills, a block, and an ace. Shenandoah had the lead until Lynchburg added another lead change to the book off a 4-0 run that put them up 14-13. Despite LYN holding the lead, SU fought back with a 6-0 streak that helped them take the set, 25-19.
Their were four lead changes in the fourth set, which helped setup a late 21-21 tie. Lynchburg scored two straight but SU made it a one score set with a Dmitruk kill. Lynchburg took the next point for a 24-22 lead, which helped set up its 25-23 fourth set victory.

Dmitruk led SU in this match with 16 kills. Hare added 20 assists, brining his evening total to 40.

Bellenbaum and Dmitruk each had three block assists. Garrett-Hymon and Martin each led the team with eight digs.
